“Whoever must be a creator always annihilates” (Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, tr. Kaufman, I.10).
level: introductory, Duration: 5 weeks
All of our passing crises have one root: our social, political, and scientific institutions are founded on the modern concept of reason and our intellectual authorities have rejected the notion that reason can guide human life. Nietzsche understood this crisis better than almost anyone, and his project was intended to create the conditions for the overcoming of our civilisation and its replacement by a world-wide aristocracy.
Nietzsche’s philosophical rhetoric has had an unparalleled effect on modern life: it’s why we talk about “values” (instead of principles or goods) or “power” (instead of excellence); however, his goal is poorly understood. For example, Nietzsche’s attacks on the standards of traditional philosophy and religion are often thought to imply a celebration of diverse ways of thinking and living. In fact, he regarded this as a contemptible view, which would contribute to the ironic self-destruction of our current society prior to the creation of new values by “the philosophers of the future.”
